Risnjak National Park

The protected mountain wilderness of Gorski Kotar, right next to our guesthouse.

Where the lynx still roams

Risnjak National Park was established in 1953 and covers about 63 km² of mountain massif between the Croatian Littoral and Gorski Kotar. It is named after the lynx (ris in Croatian), the large forest cat that still lives in these woods.

Coastal and continental influences meet in a small area, so the park hides an exceptional variety of plants and wildlife: dense fir and beech forest, mountain meadows, karst sinkholes and rare alpine flowers.

The Veliki Risnjak peak

At 1528 metres, Veliki Risnjak is the highest peak in the park. On clear days the summit offers views of the Kvarner Gulf, the islands and the Alps. The climb suits experienced hikers, with the Schlosserov dom mountain hut along the way.

Source of the Kupa

In the north of the park rises the Kupa river, one of the most beautiful karst springs in Croatia. Its emerald pool, framed by steep wooded slopes, is a perfect spot for quiet moments and photography.
